Fighting the Red Tide

MKN’s campaign features 20 missions with varied objectives such as escort, area defense, assassination and more, to keep the gameplay varied. Not only that, but many levels feature unique fire support abilities to call, showing that you actually have an army backing you up and helping you: it’s nice to see other tanks, mechs and defenses fight alongside you in most scenarios – effectively, too. The combat itself is fast-paced, against enormous amounts of foes, most of which are melee even if there’s no lack of ranged units, especially later on. Energy plays a vital role in keeping your machine mobile and fast enough to distance yourself from the foes – constantly consumed and slowly regenerated, it’s a resource to constantly manage – even more so with energy weapons. limitless in ammo but energy-hungry. Ammunition, energy and HP can be regained by crates lying around or found after killing enemies, also called via supply drops if you have the skill to do so. Weapons range from over-sized assault rifles to laser beams, deployable turrets, rockets and thermobaric warheads, if you think of it, it’s probably there – sadly, a lot of these weapons simply don’t stand up to par with others, limiting the array of actually good ones to a few picks. The same goes for modules and passive attachments: after testing out pretty much everything, I came to the conclusion the “meta” is limited as to what to put in your mech, especially in the final, quite hard levels. Overall each mission feels unique enough and has some surprises up its sleeve that keep the whole flow interesting

The Greatest War Mankind Ever Faced

Most of MKN is set in times of greater hardship than ever before. The Red scourge killed millions, and humanity deploys its best technology and most skilled specialists to counter it – Ethan being one of them along his comrades: the specialized Mech Unit. Yet, what seems like a lost battle ensues, and this is transposed well in each conversation, radio call or diary entry visible after completing a mission – a constant feeling of hopelessness permeates most topics. Some overly-cheesy or out-of-place situations are present, like overly-cheerful teammates at times, or downright B-movie tropes MKN would’ve been better without. In the end, a mixed bag that however succeeds in its purpose, also thanks to the environmental rendition which is actually consistent and well-done. Mech Mechanic Simulator

You’ll likely spend considerable time in the Mech Bay: it allows customizing Ethan’s mech with a vast array of weapons, active modules that mimic abilities, passive upgrades and of course, parts of diverse classes – each best suited to complement a specific loadout type or playstyle. Be an agile warrior focused on DPS, fight from the distance thanks to long-range warheads and automated defenses, or forget about munitions with energy weapons. Some missions will definitely be more feasible with specific builds, but it’s always up to the player and nothing is ever forced upon you: failing a mission incurs in no losses except the loot gained insofar, so you can always try again with a different setup. excess gear can be sold to get money for upgrades, too, so nothing goes to waste.

If you glued the mech customisation of Armored Core onto the gameplay of Earth Defense Force, you get this game. Weapon and parts variety is good. If you come from Armored Core, it’s close but not there yet (no treads, quad or hover legs). If you come from Daemon X Machina, this blows it out of the water completely. There is a lack of melee weapons. However, each weapon type requires the player to aim and shoot differently, and there are 4 weapon slots, 4 active and 4 passive slots, plus overall upgrades. Mech controls are smooth, boosting around feels good. Could use some verticality since there isn’t a jump of fly button. Combat boils down to dodging, and shooting many, many enemies, with some prioritisation as to which threats to deal with first. Scrap Mechanic

Some levels do favour certain types of weapons, so the variety mainly comes from attempting each level, or the same level, with different loadouts. Story is pretty basic and the voice-acting reminds me of a 90s dubbed anime. If you pretend this is a translated Japanese game, the cheese would smell better. Could use more than 20 levels, but there is an endless mode. Replaying levels is encouraged by unlocking parts, or simply for the fun of trying out different loadouts. This is a one-person WIP project that needs more fleshing out and polishing, but the core concept is solid and accurately addresses what mecha fans want out of a game. Several statistics such as load weight, energy regeneration, speed and more need to be considered to have a machine without significant flaws.
