and together they journey deep into the heart of a transformed Cogen City—once Kohaku’s home, now a collapsing ruin. Both mystery and mayhem await her, but with the power of ExeBreaker’s Ouroboros System on her side, nothing will stop her from discovering the truth of what happened to her beloved home. The game is also uses the “rewind” function to open invisible platforms and rewind to a previous state before you died. The game doesn’t have button remapping, and certain mechanics like the rewind, dodging, and wall jumping takes some time to get used to with the slippery-ish movements. It doesn’t feel like something you’d pull off 2-3 times in your first playthrough. But nevertheless, the game delivers an awesome feel of satisfaction of taking down enemies and progressing through the levels.
Play As Kahaku Otori
COGEN: Sword of Rewind has you play as Kohaku Otori who discovers a magic sword known as ExeBreaker that has the ability to rewind time with its Ouroboros System. Although she has no memory of why she’s in a strange compound, Kohaku soon finds out that her city of COGEN is in ruins so she ventures forth on a mission to discover just what the heck is going on. Kohaku is a delightful character with a bubbly personality and her living sword ExeBreaker is more straightforward albeit with some sense of humour that shines through on occasion. I loved watching the dialogue scenes complete with Japanese voice acting and expressive character artwork, especially whenever Kohaku pulls a goofy face to punctuate a silly comment. I love it when games are this charming and the music is great, too. At its core, COGEN: Sword of Rewind is a simple game to control as all you do is run, jump, dash, and attack with a sword; kind of like Zero. You can also dodge via a backward roll and another button is used to interact with things. What makes the gameplay interesting is that you can rewind up to 3 seconds whenever your gauge is filled. Meanwhile, you have no health meter because one simple hit will end Kohaku’s life but whenever that happens, you can simply rewind time. The only way you will have to restart at the previous checkpoint is if you take damage after your gauge is depleted. This mechanic is handled impressively well and it makes an already difficult game even more challenging.
That’s right; COGEN: Sword of Rewind is a super-tough game so if you’re not a hardcore 2D action game fan then you’ll likely get too frustrated to progress past a few stages. On the flipside, if you relish this sort of challenge like I do then you’re in for a real treat as you skillfully tear through levels and practice perfecting your timing. In fact, there is a substantial amount of replay value within the campaign as you can aim to improve your score on each stage, discover shortcuts, and try to unlock some exceptionally challenging trophies that as of right now, I can’t comprehend achieving. On the downside, the campaign is quite short as it only consists of 5 stages but once you complete it, you’re tasked with playing them again and without spoiling anything. Dimension Tripper Neptune: TOP NEP
it’s much, much more difficult. One aspect of COGEN: Sword of Rewind that really stands out is its stage designs which are often jaw-dropping as you conquer oodles of super-clever scenarios throughout. For example, some parts have patrolling guards that make things a lot tougher for you if you get spotted, there are occasional platforming segments that will keep you on the edge of your seat, and you can hit projectiles and bombs back at foes to watch them explode which is always satisfying. Oh, and the boss fights are some of the best in the genre as you slowly learn tactics at each attempt for efficiently taking them down. The last couple of bosses took me a great deal of effort to topple and it felt excellent to finally watch them bite the dust.
Firstly i wanna adress some issues with things from other reviews and stuff i read people say. Demo lets you change controls too, it resets them every time you start up the demo though. The walljump is purposely not like it is in stuff like megaman X or luminous avenger. It would break the level design/bossfights really hard. Yea it feels a bit unexpected, i first as i also went in thinking dis will be a megaman X type of game. But once you get used to it feels good. Games relativly short, you can finish all stages (10 story and the 2 demo stages) in 5 hours easily including all the cutscenes. I did despite having over 400 “deaths” in total. To be fair i did play the demo for roughly 5 hours prior to the games release and explored tech and speedrun. ComeCloser VR
the 2 demo levels as i planned on getting the game with the intention of speedrunning it after my casual playthrough. Story in my opinion is servicable, the characters were charming enough dat they made me giggle a few times and i enjoyed their little bickering between each other. The meat of the game is definitly the gameplay tho. The game doesnt explain you some of its mechanics but once you realize you can tap rewinds to get brief invulnerability and reset your air jump and air dash you have a plethora of options combined with dodge rolls (wich always go backwards). You can get quite creative with your movement thru the stages wich is where the game really shines in my opinion. Graphics to me are beautiful and i find the character designs interesting enough.
